Wine Review: Clay Station 2007 Viognier
Posted by Wine Welfare | Filed under $8-$10, California, USA, Viognier, White
Apologies for the delay in reviews, folks. More on the way. This one is for the Clay Station 2007 Viognier
Color
Deep yellow straw; almost apple juice. Extremely rich yellow; not bright, but just very deep. Unusual for a wine this young.
Nose
Peaches, lychee nuts, citrus blossom and wet hay. These smells are present, before fading into nothingness. Not what I would call a tight nose, but not an explosion.
Taste
Peaches again, bathed in some butter and cinnamon. Good balance here between fruit and alcohol. The pears on the nose are missing, but the richness of the color is definitely here. This is an unctious Viognier. Lip-smacking like chicken stock. Great mid-palate, and the wine is still going strong with peach and a bit of clove on the finish. Not a hint of dryness. Amazing value.
With Food
Chicken, cream dishes, mild cheeses and nuts. Fish might not be the best. We’d go for something more dry like Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc.
